Buddha House is affiliated with the FPMT (the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition) - a global network of over 150 centres including monasteries, nunneries, publishing houses, healing centres, hospices, and meditation centres. For more information about the FPMT, you can visit their website - www.fpmt.orgwww.fpmt.org (opens in a new window).

In the beginning ...
As a result of a visit to Adelaide by a Tibetan Lama - Lama Thubten Yeshe in 1981, a need for a place to study and meditate became apparent. From the humble beginnings of meeting at a student's house, the centre now offers a comprehensive program of teachings and practices.

Buddha House provides

  • Authentic teachings by Tibetan Buddhist Lamas who have received their education at Sera Je Monastic University (India). This provides us with the unique opportunity to be a part of an unbroken lineage of spiritual teachings.
  • A vehicle for people to engage in compassionate action toward others
  • An environment where the real issues in our lives and in society can be looked at and acted upon - where theory and practice can be brought together and nurtured as a living whole.

While at Buddha House, all visitors are asked to abide by the five precepts of avoiding:

  1. killing
  2. stealing
  3. lying
  4. sexual misconduct
  5. taking intoxicants

If you are attending events at Buddha House it can be useful to be familiar with some basic guidelines for conduct at the centre. Click here to see the main points.

Sangha Support

We are very fortunate at Buddha House to have a wonderful resident teacher Venerable Thubten Dondrub. Sangha Care is special opportunity to serve our teacher in practical ways. These tasks can be cooking a meal, transporting to and from teachings or taking the teacher out for the day. Anyone interested in helping with Sangha Care on behalf of Buddha House can contact Judy and Peter Wagner via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
